Project Overview:

Bechtel helps customers deliver projects of purpose that create a lasting positive legacy globally. These large, complex, and multi-disciplined projects create jobs, grow economies, and provide opportunities for local and regional communities.

The Eva Copper Mine Project is a greenfield resource poised to become the largest new mine in Queensland, Australia. It is located in Cloncurry on the traditional lands of the Kalkadoon people. The Project is owned by Harmony, a world-class gold and copper mining and development company with assets in South Africa, Australia, and Papua New Guinea.

Bechtel is delivering the Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) scope for the Eva Copper Process Plant and Non-Process Infrastructure. Bechtel is providing these EPC services across all disciplines and functions for this exciting capital project.

Job Summary:

The Designer/Drafter is responsible for providing site-based drafting and technical drawing support to the Field Engineering Team. The role develops construction sketches, design modifications, utility and excavation drawings, redline markups, as-built documentation, and Field Change Document support packages. The position works closely with construction and engineering personnel to resolve field issues, improve constructability, and maintain accurate project records throughout construction and commissioning.

Responsible for the administration, review, approval, issuance, tracking, and closeout of excavation permits. Maintains the excavation permit register, assigns permit numbers, coordinates multidisciplinary reviews, verifies compliance with excavation and utility avoidance requirements, authorizes permits for construction activities, and ensures all permit documentation is accurately maintained throughout the permit lifecycle.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Prepare detailed 2D and 3D drawings using project drafting software.
  • Develop construction sketches and field installation details.
  • Produce temporary works and construction support drawings as directed by Field Engineers.
  • Update drawings to reflect approved field changes and design modifications
  • Produces drawings and documentation in accordance with established design and scope including design of earthwork, drainage, road design, foundation, and steel detailing​ 
  • Coordinates and interfaces as directed with the day-to-day technical work of field engineers​ and Assist Field Engineers in resolving constructability and design issues.
  • Verify field conditions and prepare drawing markups based on site inspections and Prepares or oversees the preparation of civil/structural design estimates and work plan in accordance with project scope, schedule and budget, and manages implementation and performance accordingly​ 
  • Coordinates with client representatives as delegated to obtain approval on phases of work​ and Reviews key civil/structural engineering drawings and calculations and Ensures civil/structural systems designs comply with all applicable installation codes, regulations, and standards
  • Verify excavation limits are clearly defined and Confirm IFC drawings, model shots, utility drawings, and supporting documents are attached.
  • Verify underground services and utility are identified and Confirm excavation controls such as shoring, benching, battering, access/egress and hold points are included.
  • Coordinate reviews by Civil, Electrical, Piping, Survey, ESH, and other stake holders as required.

Education and Experience Requirements:

  • 2 - 5 years of relevant work experience.
  • Specialized courses in drafting, design and engineering practices.

Required Knowledge and Skills:

  • Experience in design and drafting and demonstrated skill in a lead role or recognized courses in the directing of personnel.
  • Sound knowledge of design and drafting techniques, engineering drawings, graphic arts, reading of drawings, and reproduction methods used by the discipline.
  • Skill in reading, interpreting and using related documents and drawings prepared by other project groups.
  • Experience with relevant software e.g. OpenRoads Designer.
