Bechtel is providing a wide variety project and contract management services, crossing all disciplines, to customers in Western Australia to support exciting capital works programmes, including in aviation, defence and energy infrastructure. We are looking for people to join us in a long-term relationship to deliver these services in and around Perth where we are working within integrated teams with our customers and to help build Bechtel’s capabilities for even greater opportunities in the future.
Job Summary:
The Senior Claims Manager provides specialist commercial and contractual claims expertise to programs and projects, ensuring claims strategy, risk assessment, entitlement analysis, and stakeholder engagement support effective project delivery and commercial outcomes. The role provides functional leadership, strategic guidance, and structured assessment of claims positions across current and future projects. #LI-AF1
Major Responsibilities:
Claims Strategy & Governance: Lead the development and implementation of claims management frameworks, ensuring early identification of risks, assessment of entitlement, exposure quantification, prioritisation of actions, and consistent portfolio-wide governance.
Claims Advisory: Provide commercially focused advice on liability, entitlement, time, cost, and risk impacts to support project and commercial decision-making.
Negotiation & Dispute Avoidance: Lead or support negotiations with contractors, suppliers, and other counterparties to resolve claims efficiently, minimise disputes, and maintain effective commercial relationships.
Claims Documentation & Case Management: Prepare and oversee claims submissions, responses, position papers, and supporting evidence. Maintain accurate, well-structured claim records suitable for executive review and formal dispute resolution processes.
Stakeholder Management: Partner with Procurement, Legal, Finance, and Project teams to align claims positions with commercial objectives, communicate risks effectively, and support informed decision-making.
Capability Building & Continuous Improvement: Enhance organisational capability in claims prevention and management through coaching, process improvement, and the integration of lessons learned into future contracts, procurement, and project delivery practices.
Education and Experience Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent experience) in a relevant discipline such as Law, Construction Management, Quantity Surveying, Engineering, Commerce, or Business.
- Demonstrated senior-level experience in claims management, contract administration, commercial management, or dispute resolution within a major infrastructure, construction, engineering, or project-based environment.
- Extensive knowledge of contract forms, claims mechanisms, delay and disruption principles, variations, extensions of time, and dispute resolution processes.
- Proven experience preparing, assessing, negotiating, and resolving complex, high-value claims while balancing legal, commercial, and relationship considerations.
- Strong understanding of project controls, cost management, schedule analysis, risk management, and record-keeping practices that support effective claims outcomes.

Listens carefully and probes beneath the surface to gain richer insight on others' views.
- Business Insight: Applies knowledge of the business(specifically contracts, and project delivery environment) to advance organisational interests. For example, leverages insights (e.g. how claims issues affect cost, schedule, risk, relationships, and strategic priorities) to shape and drive critical initiatives. Shares industry developments with the team; helps them grasp business and industry fundamentals and understand how they contribute.
- Plans and Aligns: Plans and prioritises work to meet commitments aligned with PAPL and Program goals. For example, stays focused on plans and improvises in response to changes, including risks and contingencies. Aligns own team's work with other workgroups' such as Program or Legal team. Looks ahead to determine and obtain needed resources to complete plans.
- Strategic Mindset: Sees ahead to future possibilities and translates them into practical strategies.. Clearly identifies and prioritises efforts and initiatives to have the greatest strategic impact on the organisation. (for eg, identifies recurring issues, anticipates dispute triggers, and shapes actions that improve long-term contract and project outcomes.)
