Project Overview:

Bechtel has a strong commitment to protecting people and the environment as part of its mission, and is known for industry leadership in Environmental, Safety, and Health (EHS).  EHS teams are comprised of three distinct disciplines that support our EHS Management System and processes at project sites and offices. These teams include environmental scientists, safety specialists, and industrial hygiene scientists. Collectively, they provide technical guidance and perform planning, risk assessment, inspections and monitoring, training, and data management. 

An opportunity exists to work within the EHS team on our Lilly Houston Project located in Houston, Texas. 

Job Summary:

Provides support under the direction of senior EHS management for the implementation and ongoing effectiveness of the project’s Behavior Based Safety Program known as Craft Based Leadership (CBL). Performs technical safety and health tasks, observations, and the training required for worker (peer-to-peer) monitoring activities. Reports to and receives technical direction and functional supervision from the EHS Manager and/or EHS Services Manager.  #LI-AE2

Major Responsibilities:

  • Leads and completes implementation of the project CBL Program, including observation processes, coaching, and feedback loops. 
  • Attends safety orientation for new hires, project teams, and the client to promote the CBL Program. 
  • Prepares EHS reports and studies of a technical nature as they apply to behavior based safety. 
  • Aids in follow-through on inspection and audit findings to ensure corrections are made, and supports the quality review of CBL observations and feedback. 
  • Writes, posts, and delivers weekly CBL messages and communications supporting current behavioral focus areas. 
  • Ensures proper record retention for the following documents: training attendance list, meeting minutes and attendance list, in accordance with the corporate requirements. 
  • Executes other EHS duties as assigned by EHS manager or supervisor.  
  • Conducts CBL presentations to labor unions, subcontractors, and craft workforce as required, in coordination with Industrial Relations. 
  • Chairs, records, and coordinates actions for the weekly CBL steering committee meeting. 
  • Reports and documents observation data trends and reviews them with the EHS team – performance graphs, behavior by category (work area or other demographics) as determined by the CBL team, and safe versus at-risk behavior trends. 
  • Ensure requirements for refresher and specialized training are tracked and implemented and maintain a training calendar. 
  • Supports projects with specialized training requests.  
  • Supports in other Craft Based Leadership initiatives (Dropped Object Prevention coach; Hazard School training etc) 

Education and Experience Requirements:

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in a specialized scientific field (e.g., safety, industrial engineering, public health) or process / mechanical engineering plus 3 years of practical work experience in the discipline performing the responsibilities listed above or in lieu of a degree, 5 years of directly related work experience.  

Required Knowledge and Skills:

  • Confident user of Microsoft Office Suite, SharePoint, Power BI and One Drive tools.  
  • Highly proficient trainer and facilitator of adult learning and assessment.  
  • Demonstrates ability to prepare and present effective oral and written reports.  
  • Demonstrates experience in the identification of training needs and coordination of training delivery.  
  • Experience with the development, implementation, and sustainment of Behavior Based Safety or similar worker-led safety observation programs. 
  • Experience in development, presentation, and assessment of EHS education and training plans/packages on large construction projects required  
  • Excellent verbal, writing and presentation skills  
  • Ability to work unsupervised  
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and operate in a fast-paced environment.
