Job Summary:

The Workforce Development Instructor for Structural Ironworking delivers classroom, hands-on, field, and skills-based training that supports the development, qualification, and safe performance of craft professionals on large industrial construction projects. The instructor builds field-ready structural-ironworking capability through practical demonstrations, structured coaching, written and hands-on assessments, and competency verification. This position supports both Union and Open Shop operations with regular deployment to project locations for training and workforce development activities. #LI-TH1

Major Responsibilities:

  • Deliver structural ironworker instruction: Provide classroom, hands-on, and field-based instruction for apprentices, helpers, journey-level craft professionals, and supervisory personnel.
  • Teach core structural skills: Cover structural-steel materials and components, unloading and handling, erection sequencing, connection types, bolting, alignment, plumbing, grating, stairs, handrails, decking awareness, access, fall protection, tolerances, and inspection-readiness.
  • Teach drawing interpretation: Develop participant proficiency in reading structural drawings, erection plans, piece marks, connection details, bolt schedules, dimensions, elevations, specifications, and layout information.
  • Evaluate competency: Administer written assessments, practical demonstrations, skills verifications, and job-level assessments; document results, identify performance gaps, and provide fair, skill-focused coaching and retraining.
  • Support workforce progression: Facilitate apprenticeship, upskilling, multiskilling, craft progression, qualification, certification, and workforce-readiness programs aligned with established curricula and project needs.
  • Maintain qualification boundaries: Teach and evaluate only within assigned qualifications and approved requirements. Reinforce that welding, rigging, crane signaling, equipment operation, inspection, and specialized bolting activities require the appropriate separate qualification or authorization.
  • Maintain training materials: Develop, review, and update lesson plans, participant materials, practical exercises, assessments, and evaluator guides to reflect industrial practices, controlled requirements, and lessons learned.
  • Maintain records: Coordinate training events and maintain accurate attendance, assessment, qualification, progression, and completion documentation.
  • Support projects: Travel extensively to project sites and support workforce mobilization, project startup, instructor coordination, training-facility setup, regional coverage, and short-notice training needs.
  • Promote safe and respectful learning: Reinforce environmental, safety, health, and quality requirements; explain the reason behind expectations; correct unsafe behavior immediately; and provide constructive feedback privately when practical.

Education and Experience Requirements:

  • Requires bachelor's degree (or international equivalent) and 2-5 years of relevant experience or 6-9 years of relevant work experience in lieu of degree.

Required Knowledge and Skills:

  • Strong working knowledge of structural-steel members, connection types, fasteners, erection methods, bolting practices, alignment, tolerances, access systems, and workmanship expectations.
  • Ability to interpret structural drawings, erection plans, piece marks, connection details, bolt schedules, specifications, dimensions, elevations, and field installation requirements.
  • Proficiency in trade math, measurement, layout, material identification, erection sequencing, connection work, alignment, and use of common structural-ironworking tools and equipment.
  • Working knowledge of applicable OSHA construction requirements, including Structural Steel Erection, fall protection, controlled access, struck-by and caught-between hazards, material handling, lifting interfaces, and required PPE.
  • Ability to facilitate classroom, practical, and field-based instruction for participants with varied experience levels, literacy levels, learning styles, and generational backgrounds.
  • Ability to evaluate knowledge and demonstrated skill objectively, explain the why behind required practices, identify performance gaps, provide respectful coaching, and document qualification decisions.
  • Strong communication, presentation, facilitation, writing, organization, and time-management skills.
  • Ability to work independently in active field environments and collaborate with craft supervision, construction, safety, quality, engineering, equipment, and workforce-development personnel.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
  • Ability and willingness to travel extensively, work project-to-project, and adjust schedules to support project execution.

Preferred Qualifications

  • NCCER Structural Ironworker credential recognized apprenticeship completion, or equivalent documented journey-level qualification.
  • Experience with relevant NCCER structural-ironworking curricula, performance profiles, assessments, and credentialing processes.
  • NCCER Certified Craft Instructor, Master Trainer, or Performance Evaluator credentials. Candidates without these credentials must be able to obtain required instructor or evaluator credentials after hire.
  • Experience developing structural-ironworking curricula, practical exercises, job-level assessments, competency verifications, or craft-progression programs.
  • Experience supporting workforce-development environments and structured apprenticeship programs.
  • Bilingual English and Spanish capability is a plus.
  • Familiarity with Bechtel processes is a plus but is not required. Required company-specific training, qualifications, and authorizations may be completed after hire.
