Project Overview:

Bechtel is anticipating a further project award for a new motorway in Serbia. The project alignment traverses challenging mountainous regions and valleys, where managing interfaces with existing local infrastructure will be critical. Bechtel would perform the role of EPC contractor in a joint venture with a strategic partner. The first phase of the project will involve early technical work and route design in preparation for full mobilization.

Job Summary:

Design Coordinator supports the delivery of multidisciplinary engineering for the Novi Pazar Motorway Project.

 

Working within a Project Management Organization (PMO) and joint venture environment, the Design Coordinator will support the coordination and integration of design activities across engineering disciplines and external stakeholders. The role focuses on tracking design progress, managing interfaces, facilitating coordination, and ensuring alignment with project requirements related to quality, schedule, and constructability.

 

The Design Coordinator works closely with the Design Manager and project leadership team, acting as a central point of coordination between engineering teams, contractors, and the Client’s organization to ensure timely and efficient delivery of design outputs.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate day-to-day design activities across multidisciplinary teams, including highway, structures, geotechnical, drainage, and utilities.
  • Support the integration of design inputs across project components, ensuring alignment between disciplines and stakeholders.
  • Track design deliverables against the project schedule and milestones, identifying delays, risks, and interface issues.
  • Facilitate coordination between joint venture partners, design consultants, contractors, and the Client’s team.
  • Support the preparation, review, and submission of design deliverables in accordance with project and contractual requirements.
  • Maintain design coordination systems, including document management tools (e.g., Aconex/ACC), ensuring accurate and timely documentation.
  • Assist in organizing and facilitating design coordination meetings, workshops, and design review sessions, ensuring timely closure of actions.
  • Support constructability reviews and ensure that design solutions align with construction methodology and site constraints.
  • Assist in managing design changes, technical queries (RFIs), and non-conformances, ensuring proper tracking and resolution.
  • Coordinate with procurement and construction teams to ensure design requirements align with vendor inputs and execution needs.
  • Support compliance with applicable codes, standards, regulatory requirements, and project quality procedures.
  • Contribute to value engineering, lessons learned, and continuous improvement initiatives across the design function.

Education and Experience Requirements:

  • Requires bachelor's degree (or international equivalent) and 10-13 years of relevant experience or 14-17 years of relevant work experience​.

Required Knowledge and Skills:

  • Minimum 10 years of relevant experience, including experience in motorway or major infrastructure projects.
  • Experience working in multidisciplinary and joint venture project environments.
  • Good understanding of highway design, including alignment, structures, drainage, and utilities coordination.
  • Familiarity with engineering workflows, including design development, approvals, and change management.
  • Experience with document management systems such as Aconex or ACC.
  • Awareness of applicable codes, standards, and regulatory requirements relevant to highway projects.
  • Strong coordination, organizational, and problem-solving skills with attention to detail.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and work effectively in a fast-paced project environment.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to interface with diverse teams and stakeholders.
  • Ability to work in a multidisciplinary and multicultural project environment.
  • Self-motivated and capable of working independently with minimal supervision.
  • Flexible and adaptable to project demands, including potential extended work hours and site-based activities.
