Project Overview:
The Project is a greenfield mining, process, material handling and ship loading project with a focus on sustaining production, minimise environmental impacts, strengthen long-term relationships with neighbouring communities and foster local economic development.
Job Summary:
Civil Lead Discipline Field Engineer reports to Project Field Engineer and is responsible for activities relating to construction engineering within the Civil Structural and Architectural (CSA) discipline and providing discipline leadership to the Field Engineering (FE) team.
Duties include technical oversight and mentoring of CSA FE, providing project field engineering support with work planning and packaging, material management, quantity verification and validation, safety and quality control, technical inspection and testing knowledge, and coordination of system turnover, field verification of materials, and technical direction to field piping personnel as required. Your work will contribute to ensuring field engineering activities operate safely, are complete, and conform to quality standards and project requirements.
In this role, you will support construction Superintendents develop work scope packages and cost estimates for a project’s mechanical aspects including complex major equipment packages.
Major Responsibilities:
Leadership
- Providing discipline leadership to the FE team include technical oversight and mentoring of FE.
- Work Planning & Packaging
- Prepares construction drawings and sketches.
- Interfaces in planning construction methods and procedures.
Material Management
- Initiates requisitions for field purchases
- Prepares quantity take-offs of field purchased material and equipment.
Quality Control and Quantity tracking
- Monitoring and assisting in maintaining all required engineering design as per the project Quality Assurance/Control and project procedures.
- Verifies commodities on quantity tracking systems or other computer database systems as required.
Safety
- Ensures zero accident philosophy and requirements are implemented and adhered to by craft and others when in the operational area, and tools and equipment are in safe condition and operated safely.
Technical
- Performs Civil Field Engineering activities including inspections, audits and planning to support the installation of formwork, rebar, concrete, structural steel, architectural, earthwork and performs rigging support and planning activities for material and equipment
- Perform Field Engineering activities relating to the completion of: temporary buildings; permanent building structures, cladding and external fit-out.
- Proactively consider continuous learning or show interest to pursue appropriate learning activities
For Direct Hire
- Develops firm understanding of system and area scoping and drawings required for package development.
- Reviews and approves inspection test plans
STR / Subcontract Coordinator
- Reviews and approves inspection test plans
- Coordinates reviews of subcontractor submittals
Education and Experience Requirements:
- Requires a bachelor's degree (or international equivalent) and 8-10 years of relevant experience or 12-14 years of relevant work experience (CPEng preferred)
- Knowledge of Bechtel’s Zero Accident Philosophy.
- Knowledge of the Project ES&H Handbook, the Supervisors ES&H Manual, the Project Safety Management Plan and the Bechtel Core Processes.
- Experience in engineering of process plants or materials handling plants in Australia.
Required Knowledge and Skills:
- Strong knowledge of project engineering processes and procedures and the interaction with the other disciplines
- Understanding rebar placement drawings, steel erection drawings and architectural finish drawings.
- Must be computer-literate in word processing, spreadsheet and Bechtel database applications.
- Must be familiar with current industry quality standards.
- Knowledge of Project Technical Requests for routing and resolving Requests for Information (RFIs), Field Change Documents (FCDs), and Non Conformance/Compliance Reports (NCRs) between project sites, contractors, clients, and home office.
- Knowledge of work packaging. Basic understanding of production management including scheduling.
- Strong communication, interpersonal and teamwork skills.
- Knowledge of cost management including estimating and forecast development.
- Direct hire construction experience
Additional Information:

Must be physically able to conduct field inspections and participate in project walk-downs which may require the following activities: extensive walking in and around a construction site, climbing ladders, climbing scaffolding, using fall protection and other personal protective equipment (PPE), walking on elevated platforms, walking on uneven surfaces, and manoeuvring around very small and/or confined spaces.
